Artist's Description

In mid-August of 2020 I visited Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado to escape the heat of the summer. The day before the Cameron Peak fire had started near the park. Colorado already had three fires burning through its forests. It's sad to see such destruction in such a beautiful state. I made the drive up Trail Ridge Road in the park to the visitors center and you couldn't help but see the smoke the entire drive up. Once at the visitors center I made the short hike to the view point above the center. It broke my heart to see the forest burning while most everyone around me was ignoring it and just taking selfies. I noticed this one person sitting on a rock and just watching. I thought it was a powerful moment to capture.

About Kevin Schwalbe

Kevin Schwalbe

Growing up in Minnesota, I was always captivated by the sight of the sun rising over misty lakes and the desire to find a way to capture those images on film. That desire to capture a beautiful sunrise has always stayed with me. When I moved to Colorado more than twenty years ago, the inspiration of our state’s beauty and my love of photography met and became one. At home or when traveling the world, I enjoy finding unexpected ways to view both the common and the extraordinary and share these through my photography. Resident artist at Gallery 6 in the Santa Fe Arts District in Denver, Colorado. All images ©2000-2023 Kevin Schwalbe. All rights reserved.
